Welcome to Norkai Studios, a collection of standing sets in downtown Los Angeles. Being near Little Tokyo, we named our standing sets Nor (for North) and Kai (for ‘sea’ in Japanese) after the North Sea neighborhood it’s located in.

We set out to establish a sound stage and studio built by filmmakers, for other filmmakers, specifically independent and student filmmakers who cannot afford to rent gargantuan, sprawling Hollywood sound stages for their films. We decided focusing on creating smaller, pre-built ‘macro’ standing sets that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive to lease. Our goal is to help the filmmaking community by providing creators with great value, allowing flexibility, affordability, and quality standing sets where visions can come to life without breaking the bank.

For stage rentals, we currently have 4 different sets occupying a total of 3,000 square feet: A hospital room set or hospital set complete with nurse’s station, a police station that doubles up as an office or production hub, a white cyc that can also be converted to a green screen sound stage, as well as a city alleyway that can serve as the backdrop for any metropolitan side street in the country. We also hope to roll out an interrogation room set soon too. Affordable set rental Los Angeles rates, as well as more pictures, are available here.

For equipment rentals, we have numerous lighting and camera rental options, as well as a 1 ton grip package that features a kino flos, 650 arri par cans, apple boxes, and many other grip and electric accessories. Please check out our gear rentals here.

Standing sets Los Angeles have never looked better!

Do I need equipment or liability insurance?

All production crews operating at the Norkai standing set stage must sign a waiver and are required to have their own insurance to cover liability and/or damages. Should any damages occur, crews must pay for them within 48 hours of a shoot’s completion. Use of the studio is at one’s own risk and liability.

We recommend Athos Insurance for all your production insurance needs.

Are film permits required?

Being in the City of Los Angeles, film permits are required and can be applied for via Film LA. If you are in a rush, we highly recommend Film Permits Unlimited to expedite your permit application.

Are lights included with the sound stage rentals?

For the white cyc and green screen sound stage rentals, we provide 1 4-Bank kino flo for your use. For all other set rentals, grip, electric, and lighting rentals are available for rent here.

What do we do about trash?

Productions are all responsible for disposing of any and all trash after the conclusion of their production, or we can arrange a trash pick up from the sound stage directly for a modest extra fee.

What should productions bring for craft services?

Each production is responsible for providing their own food, water, utensils, napkins/paper towels.

Do you offer discounts for multiple days and bookings?

Absolutely, we do. Contact us!

If we’re short on staffing, do you have any cast or crew you could refer to us?

On top of amazing actor and actress recommendations, we’d also be happy to refer you to affordable but experienced and professional Assistant Directors, Wardrobe/Costume Designers, Production Designers, Art Directors, Set Medics, Line Producers, Unit Production Managers, Sound Mixers, 1st Assistant Cameras, Cinematographers, Grips, Key Grips, Gaffers, Best Boys, Production Coordinators, Production Assistants, Production Interns, DITs, Set Photographers, and more.

Can we paint and hang pictures?

Yes, provided it is returned to original condition after the production wraps and ample notice is given. Pictures may be hung using removable/nonstick double-sided tape but nails are not allowed.

How do we book the space?

A 50% deposit is due to secure the stage and that can be paid out by cheque or online booking. The balance is due at the time of booking.

Is there parking available?

Definitely – There is ample free and metered parking available around the 4th street neighborhood, and we have an alleyway that can support either two grip trucks or 4 standard sized cars.

Can I come earlier than my scheduled time to set up?

No. All prep time and clean up times must take place during the booking hours. Additional time can be purchased to prep as needed.

How is studio time calculated. What happens if I go over my scheduled time by 15 minutes?

It starts from when the first person enters to when the last person leaves. Should you go over your time, you will be charged for the full hour. Since these set rentals are charged by the hour, we cannot rent the stage to another production.

What are your hours?

We are available 24 hours for filming. However, the studio is shown by 20 minute appointments only. Please contact us to schedule a viewing.

Do you do parties or event venue rentals?

Though not our specialty, Norkai stages are available to be rented out as a venue for your next event. Contact us for more details.

What about post-production?

On top of standing sets, we also offer post-production facilities for any project, including editing, coloring, visual effects (VFX) and more.
